Ceiling Medallions
Installing a ceiling medallion above your chandelier, ceiling fan, or lighting fixture is a great way to enhance the beauty of your ceiling and add value to your home. Ceiling medallions are offered in almost every size to meet your architectural and home design needs. Many come in a variety of finishes or white/primed to be left unfinished or painted to coordinate with the color theme of the room. Designed from polyurethane they are lightweight and can be easily installed on your ceiling with nails or adhesive.
Good Lighting Fundamentals
Basically, there are three types of lighting that work together to illuminate your home. General (or Ambient), Accent, and Task (or Function). A good lighting plan combines all three types to light an area according to function and style.
General lighting provides an area with overall illumination. It enables you to move about easily and safely, defines a space and customarily provides a comfortable visual environment. It is fundamental to your lighting plan. General lighting can be accomplished with pendants, chandeliers, ceiling or wall mounted fixtures, recessed or track lights and with lanterns outside your home.
Accent lighting directs additional light to a specific area, adding drama and creating visual interest. It will focus attention on art, prized possessions and architectural features. Wall washing and grazing are two popular techniques typically used to draw your eyes to the perimeter of the room and create space and texture. However, be selective, if you light everything, nothing will stand out. Accent lighting is usually achieved by track, recessed or wall-mounted fixtures.
Task lighting is light to work by, it illuminates areas where work is performed. The type, angle and amount of light should be determined based on the work being done. Task lighting should be bright enough to prevent eye strain and should be free of glare and shadows. It can be provided by recessed and track lighting, pendant lighting, portable lamps and under cabinet lights.
How do I determine the right size for my chandelier?
A chandelier should be approximately half the width of your dining table and approximately 30 inches above the tabletop. Ceilings higher than 8 feet, raise the height of the fixture about 3 inches for every additional foot in height. Please Note: If a chandelier is heavier than 50 pounds, it will
have to be mounted more securely to the ceiling or wall. Make sure there is
enough support.
What is the difference between "Damp" and "Wet" locations?
If a fixture is listed as "Damp" it means it has been tested to withstand light
moisture or raised humidity such as condensation or a light mist but are not
supposed to get wet. When a fixture is listed as "Wet", it means that it can
withstand heavier weather such as snow and/or rain, having been subjected to a
'rain test'.
How high should my ceiling fan hang?
For safety, the blades should be at least 7 feet above the floor. To ensure air circulation, a ceiling fan should hang 8 or 9 feet above the
floor. A longer down rod may be necessary to achieve this height.

How much light do I need for my kitchen island work area?

Why should I consider dimmers?
Dimmers are a good way to add interest to a room. They allow a room to have several different moods, from bright and lively to soft and intimate. As added benefits, dimmers significantly extend the life of incandescent light bulbs and light bulbs use less energy when dimmed.
What is the difference between IC and non-IC recessed lighting fixtures?
IC fixtures can be directly buried in insulation and in direct contact with combustible building materials such as wood joists and flooring.
Non-IC must maintain at least 3" from insulation on all sides and none on top so as to entrap heat, with a minimum of 1/2" from combustible materials.
What is the difference between line voltage and low voltage?
Line voltage in the United States is 120 volts. It is the voltage that is supplied to your home. Low voltage is less than the supplied voltage.
Getting low voltage to lighting requires that the 120 volts of supplied electricity passes through a transformer to reduce it.
What size ceiling fan do I need?
For maximum efficiency choose a fan to fit the size of your room. For a small area, like a bathroom, choose a 29 to 42 inch blade span fan. For larger rooms choose fans 50 inches to 54 inches in total blade span. Generally, a 52 inch fan will cool most rooms efficiently. A fan should be comparable scale to the size of the room. For instance, very large rooms can use either multiple 50-54 inch fans, or one very large fan made for large areas.
Can I use any ceiling fan outdoors?
A fan made specifically for outdoors should always be used. Outdoor ceiling fans have sealed motors to protect it from moisture and dirt, the blades are made of special all-weather material to prevent cracking and warping, and the fan will be labeled for Damp Location. Any added light kits must also be specifically for Damp Location use. If the fan will hang in a location where it might get wet, it must be a fan labeled Wet Location, and it pairs with a light kit specifically for Wet Location use.
